Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
This past weekend, the World Youth Day came to its end in Toronto, Canada. Sunday morning, over 800,000 youths gathered for the celebration of the Holy Mass that was presided by Pope John-Paul II. In truth, this was not the end of a worldwide gathering of young Catholics. It was a new beginning! To our youth, the Pope said,
"The world you are inheriting is a world which desperately needs a new sense of brotherhood and human solidarity. It is a world which needs to be touched and healed by the beauty and richness of God's love. It needs witnesses to that love. It needs you - to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world."
"Salt is used to preserve and keep. As apostles for the third millennium, your task is to preserve and keep alive the awareness of the presence of our savior Jesus Christ, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist, the memorial of his saving death and glorious resurrection. You must keep alive the memory of the words of life which he spoke, the marvellous works of mercy and goodness which he performed. You must constantly remind the world of the ''power of the Gospel to save'' (Romans 1:16). Salt seasons and improves the flavor of food. Following Jesus, you have to change and improve the ''taste'' of human history. With your faith, hope, and love, with your intelligence, courage, and perseverance, you have to humanize the world we live in. In the way that today's reading from Isaiah indicates: ''Loose the bonds of injustice ... share your bread with the hungry ... remove the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil ... Then your light shall rise in the darkness'' (Isaiah 58:6-10)."
Let us thank the Lord Jesus for having given us such a holy pontiff who can reach out to and touch the youth of the world. By his actions, he has proven many to be wrong. Every so often we hear someone saying that the young ones are losing their faith and the Catholic Church is falling. This past weekend, we have been witnessed to the truth that the Holy Spirit CAN and DOES touch our young ones and they are not losing their faith. Contrary to the claim of many, the Catholic faith shall overcome its present crosses and it shall blossom even more than in its past.
Entering the second half (August) of the Summer holidays, I pray that all of you will take the necessary precautions when driving, camping, fishing, boating, swimming, and even when lighting fires. A little negligence can ruin the holidays of many. When the Lord God created the beauties of nature, His intent was for us to enjoy it all - not to become a victim of the forces of nature.
