Back to Saskatoon Latin Mass

(Newcomer)
INSTRUCTIONS
for those attending the
Tridentine/Traditional Latin Mass.

When we go to Holy Mass, we are in the Real Presence of God.

It is recommended that you review the following “Dress Code"

COMPORTMENT OUTSIDE THE CHURCH:
Upon arrival on the Church property, the faithful should proceed quietly towards the Church. This is to ensure that those who are praying inside the Church will not be disrupted by loud noises heard through the opened windows during Summer months.

WITHIN THE VESTIBULE:
Inside the entrance hall (between the inner and outer Church doors) if one absolutely needs to speak, it must be done with a low voice.

RECEPTION:
If there is a welcomer present in the vestibule, should you have any questions, this is your opportunity to ask them in a low voice.

MISSALS:
Some Tridentine/Traditional Latin Masses have missals available at the Church entrance for usage during the Holy Mass. If you do not see any, ask the welcomer if some are available.

VEIL:
In accordance with tradition, females of all ages must wear a hat or a veil in the presence of the Lord Jesus. Such must be put on your head prior to entering the Church.

ENTERING THE CHURCH:
Once you pass the inner doors of the Church, it is total silence.

HOLY WATER FONTS:
Using the Holy Water in the font, while facing the Blessed Tabernacle in the front of the Church, with your right hand, make the Sign of the Cross. At the same time, make a complete genuflection with your knee touching the floor, unless you are a disabled person.

Parents of preschoolers are encouraged to teach their children how to make the Sign of the Cross with Holy Water, the younger - the better.

WALKING PACE:
The walking pace in the Church is a slow pace. The children, including the Altar servers, should be told to never run in the Church. Such a pace lacks reverence towards the Lord Jesus.

PEW SELECTION:
Proceed to the pew of your choice. Prior to entering the pew, again, make a complete genuflection while doing the sign of the Cross with your right hand.

MOMENT OF PRIVATE PRAYER:
Once in the pew, the faithful usually kneel and take a moment to greet the Lord Jesus in prayer (conversation).

CHILDREN PACING THE FLOOR
Children should be told to stay in place. Unnecessary pacing of the floor, from the pew to the back of the Church is not acceptable. It disrupts those who are praying.

GREETINGS:
While proceeding to your pew and/or once in your pew, it is not proper to start talking to someone you recognize. Greetings can be done outside the Church after the end of the Mass.

COMMUNION LINE:
If you qualify and wish to receive Holy Communion, you may proceed in the line at your convenience.

The Communion line is strictly for those who will be receiving Holy Communion. The modern practice of children and adult going to the Communion rail with their arms crossed for a private blessing is not part of the Tridentine Holy Mass Tradition. The priests blesses all the faithful at the end of the celebration. The crossed arms practice should not be encouraged.

COMMUNION RAIL:
Upon your arrival at the Communion Rail to receive Holy Communion, you are required to kneel down and place your hands under the Altar cloth (Communion cloth). This is to ensure that you will not touch any particles of the Consecrated Host should a piece fall.

Holy Communion (Consecrated bread) is to be received on the tongue by everyone. There is to be no distribution of the Blood of Christ (Consecrated wine).

SPECIAL NEEDS:
Sometimes the little ones will get noisy because they have a special need that needs to be taken care of such as breast feeding, a wet diaper, temporarily bored, etc... Such requires that the parent and child temporarily remove themselves from the congregation. A location is usually set aside to deal with these needs until such time as the matter has been dealt with. Feel free to use this service if necessary.

HIGH MASS:
During the High Mass, only the Altar boy responds to the words of the priest that are found in the Missal.

THE END OF THE MASS:
The end of the Holy Mass does not take place until such time as the priest has left the sanctuary. Please refrain from leaving the Church prior to that time.

BEFORE MASS

CONFESSIONS: As a general rule, the Sacrament of Confession is available prior to the celebration of the Holy masses. Telephone the Church a few days ahead of time to find out if this service is available at your location.

LIGHTING CANDLES: It is permitted to go and light candles, providing the fee per piece is paid.

THE HOLY ROSARY: Most Traditional Latin Mass have the recitation of the Holy Rosary half an hour prior to the Holy Mass. You are welcomed to participate.

WAY OF THE CROSS: You are welcomed to quietly do the spiritual exercise of the Way of the Cross prior to the Holy Mass.
