Q. 1. What oil(s) does the Catholic Church use for its different kinds of anointings?
A. 1. Pure olive oil is used for the oil of catechumens and for the oil of the sick. Pure olive oil, mixed with balm or balsam, is used for the holy chrism.
It should be noted that in 1970, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments directed that, in case of necessity, the holy oils may be made from a plant different than of olive oil.
