Q. 1. We all know that Pope Benedict XVI has resigned from office. What will happen to him once he is no longer Pope?
A. 1. At present, we know that:
a. Pope Benedict XVI will have to turn in the papal ring known as the "ring of the fisherman." It will be smashed. The papal ring, the sign of authority, is always smashed at the end of a papacy, either by death or retirement.
b. Pope Benedict XVI will no longer enjoy the Swiss Guard.
c. He will no longer wear red shoes.
d. He will continue to wear a white cassock.
e. He will be known as "emeritus pope" which means "retired but retaining the title."
f. He will be called "Your Holiness Benedict XVI" and either emeritus pope or emeritus Roman Pontiff.
g. He will be required to vacate the papal residence on February 28, 2013, his last day as Pope.
