Frequently Asked Questions
regarding the meaning of

SEPTUAGESIMA SUNDAY.

Q. 1. What is Septuagesima Sunday? I never heard of this Sunday before.

A. 1. According to wikipedia, Septuagesima Sunday is the name for the ninth Sunday before Easter, the third before Ash Wednesday. The term is sometimes applied also to the period commonly called Shrovetide (the Pre-Lenten Season) that begins on this day and ends on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins.

There is more to the matter which is not mentioned on the internet. The word Septuagesima means seventy. According to the First Council of Orleans, in the year A.D. 545, many pious ecclesiastics and lay persons of the primitive Church used to fast seventy days before Easter, and their fast was called, therefore, Septuagesima, a name which was afterwards retained to distinguish this Sunday from others.
