Frequently Asked Questions
regarding
DIVINE REVELATION.

Q. 1. What is Divine Revelation?

A. 1. Divine revelation is the manifestation which God has made to us of what we should know about Him and His will in our regard, and how we are to worship Him.

Q. 2. Why is this revelation called Divine?

A. 2. This revelation is called Divine because it comes from God and leads us to the possession of God.

Q. 3. Is there any Catholic Church writing on Divine Revelation?

A. 3. Yes, there is.

"In the Second Vatican Council’s document on Divine revelation, Dei Verbum (Latin: "The Word of God"), the relationship between Tradition and Scripture is explained: "Hence there exists a close connection and communication between sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture. For both of them, flowing from the same Divine wellspring, in a certain way merge into a unity and tend toward the same end. For sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspiration of the Divine Spirit. To the successors of the apostles, sacred Tradition hands on in its full purity God's word, which was entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit.

"Thus, by the light of the Spirit of truth, these successors can in their preaching preserve this word of God faithfully, explain it, and make it more widely known. Consequently it is not from Sacred Scripture alone that the Church draws her certainty about everything which has been revealed. Therefore both Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are to be accepted and venerated with the same devotion and reverence."

Q. 4. Can the Catholic Church add or change Divine Revelation so it will be up-to-date with the times?

A. 4. No, Divine Revelation cannot be changed or improved. It is the pure revealed Word of God through Jesus Christ. Nobody surpasses the Divine Wisdom of God for His people.

"In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word - and he has no more to say... because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty." [C.C.C. # 65]

"Christian faith cannot accept "revelations" that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillment, as is the case in certain non-Christian religions and also in certain recent sects which base themselves on such "revelations"." [C.C.C. # 67]

Let it be said that no man is above God, no man can change the Words of God, nor can a man correct God regarding His teachings on purity. Such a foolish man would call the curses of God upon himself.
