Q. 1. I am interested in becoming a Godparent. How do I go about being one?
A. 1. First of all, to qualify as a Godparent, you must be a practicing Catholic who has received the three Sacraments of Initiation, Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. As a Godparent, you cannot be expected to mentor a Godchild if you have not received all of the Sacraments of initiation.
Secondly, you must meet the Church requirements that are listed under Question # 1 here.
Thirdly, you must not be prevented from being a Godparent because of one of the conditions listed under Question # 2 here.
Fourthly, you are encouraged to participate in your parish "Baptismal Preparation class."
Finally, now that you qualify as a Godparent, you should inform your relatives and friends that you are available as a candidate to be the Godparent of their child. In the event that you do not have any relatives or friends who are expecting a child in the near future, you can inform your parish priest of your availability to be a Godparent/Sponsor. There are always parents who cannot find a qualifying Godparent/Sponsor for their child and they would be more than happy to have a caring person come forward to be the spiritual mentor of their child.
