Q. 1. What is "candlemas?"
A. 1. Candlemas is synonymous to the Feast of the Purification of Mary which is celebrated on February 2. Candlemas commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin. According to Mosaic law, it is celebrated forty days after Christ's birth and the presentation of the Child Jesus in the temple. On that day, candles are blessed and a lighted candle procession is held to commemorate Christ as the light of revelation to the Gentiles. This also represents the entry of Jesus into the temple.
In Scotland it is the legal term day on which interests and rents are payable.
