Frequently Asked Questions
regarding
THE MEANING OF
"MEMENTO OF THE DEAD."

Q. 1. What does "Memento of the dead" mean?

A. 1. The "Memento of the dead" is the commemoration of the faithful departed, after the Consecration of the Mass. In the Roman Canon, the Memento is always made silently, after the brief announcement,

"Remember, Lord, those who have died and have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, especially those for whom we now pray."

In the other canons, there is a general Memento for all the deceased, preceded, in Masses for the Dead, by a special prayer that includes mention by name of those for whom the Mass is being said.
