A. 1. First of all, it is not a Catholic song. Secondly, some believe that it is about Mary. Such is not the case.

The song was authored in 1772 by Englishman John Newton, a slave trader, as a response to a powerful conversion experience. After a terrifying storm at sea, Newton realized that it was only by God's grace that he would be saved; these sentiments later becoming the origin of the song.
